Are You Living Life To The Fullest?

I believe investing is our health is the most important financial decision we can make in our lifetime. I believe everyone deserves to:

  • feel vibrant and strong inside-out.
  • have an incredible zest for life.
  • replace opportunities or fears.
  • travel and explore.
  • grow, expand, and share.
  • and passionately do what they love the most.

Close your eyes and think 10, 20, 30, 40, 50 years ahead. What quality of life do wish for yourself? Does that ensure you continue to do things you love the most, have energy, functional mobility, and cognitive health to continue to express your love to your loved ones?

The truth is I did not always look at myself and life that way until I took time to reevaluate and think ahead and get real. For most of my adult life, I was clueless especially when it came to my lifestyle and health.

I had been great on WHAT to do. I had always figured out HOW to for my what. Yet, I did not have a meaningful purpose in life, my WHY was very poor. Since I started my health journey which eventually turned into a complete lifestyle and career change, all the learnings, personal changes, reversing my pre-diabetes, and continuous investment in personal growth have changed me forever.

I am passionate about sharing my experiences, successes and failures–hence the reason I started Be Fab – Be You LLC . It is important to me to raise awareness, plant seeds, educate people, and help others get to their WHY as well so they can make changes stick as well.

Often, many people realize that they have abused their bodies and mind when they get to their mid 40s and 50s. Poor energy, libido, focus, productivity, confidence, self-esteem, and zest for life. Bloating, skin issues, stubborn belly fat, brain fog, cravings, and mood swings have become fixtures and go unnoticed until something tragic happens. The lifestyle we are (were) exposed to and choose to lead matters every day. I have met some people who have chosen to shut their eyes and ears, live in denial, and take no action. The whatever attitude is expressed in words or body language. Plus, many of them speak loud enough trying to convince others to join their train.

It is our responsibility, from time to time, to kindly offer help. We cannot give up on them because at some point, that person might be ready for change and you will love to contribute to his/her grow.

Would you like to play a game? After you finish reading this newsletter:

  1. Take 5 to 10 minutes to make a list of people who could be encouraged to improve their health.
  2. Do not judge and think he/she might not welcome what you have to say, from your heart.
  3. Prioritize your list. Who does need support the most? Who do you feel most comfortable with?
  4. Every week or two, reach to one person. Invest time to call or meet in person.
  5. Say something like, ‘I was thinking on our conversation or your post about how you’ve feeling, etc’. Be kind and show you are there to help and whatever you discuss is confidential.
  6. Offer accountability or whatever you feel comfortable with. Of course you are always welcome to refer to a coach like myself. I offer a few Energy Audit free every month.

I believe in changing one live at a time. Let’s unite efforts so we can live in a more positive, healthier, and vibrant world.

Why am I talking about this? On March 13rd, I lost a very good friend of mine. This 35 years old, symbol of health, left us. There was a tumor in his frontal lobe. It reminded me that LIFE IS SHORT. I will continue to do what I preach, so I have the energy to help people live their lives to the fullest as well. I am not perfect. Nobody is. I am doing my best and I want you to do the same. Live with no regrets. Health is fundamentally important to get there. Read more here.

RIP Richard Bowen – Will Miss You

The evening of March 13, 2017 was very sad for me with the loss of my friend Richard Bowen. I kinda lost it that night ~ 9pm when I read the update on his sudden hospitalization for a brain surgery. He never made to surgery. Eventually, I learned that was a tumor on this frontal lobe, close to this note and eye. I had seen Richard at the gym on March 6th.  On March 9th, we got the news he was in Miami, in the ICU, highly sedated and by his mom’s side, waiting for brain surgery. I was shocked. And then, a few more days and Richard is dead.

Life-Is-ShortImmediately, it reminded me that LIFE IS JUST TOO SHORT. It’s about NOW, not yesterday, or tomorrow. Sobbing and filled with sadness, I grabbed the phone and called my best friend to tell her I loved her to death and to reaffirm how important she is to me. She is family to me. Call mom and sister in Brazil and expressed my gratitude and love.

I needed time to reflect. I couldn’t go home. I went from one local bar to the next, not to get drunk, but to be with people. I cried and talked to strangers; we shared ‘stuff’ about life, they met Richard and learned how beautiful his soul was, and we talked about the loved ones in our lives. It helped me get through until I went home about 1:30am.

gothic-tearsTears and deep emptiness continue for the next two days. For the next week, my mind and body decided I needed to take a break, continue to meet people, and grieve. Life is about living, expressing and not internalizing. I wrote, I talked, I showed gratitude, and I realigned a few things with myself.

Why was his time to go? I do not know. This 35 year old Jamaican man, with a beautiful, vibrant, giving, and caring soul, touched many lives, including mine. He was a crossfit and passionate yoga instructor, committed to wellness and fitness (his own and of others). He was a fantastic volleyball player and lately, he was helping teenager boys at a high school to understand the benefit of yoga, breathing, and peace. He was a giver. I am thankful to have met Richard.

We don’t expect a healthy and young person like Richard to go so soon. We must believe God has better plans for him. We must belief that his death is the creation of much bigger things—from inspiring others to be their best, to finding and following their ‘calling’, to bringing people closer, to saving lives of others, to x,w,x I don’t know what, when, how. I do know there is a bigger reason for him to go….beyond anyone’s understanding. It might take months, years, or decades to for these amazing bursts to happen, but they will. I feel it in my heart. I hope his mom and sister do as well. I cannot imagine their pain. Prayers and thoughts with them now and forever.

Richard and I shared a few things in common and maybe explain some of my emotional breakdown.

Maria-Horstmann-wellness-warrior1. We both left our well paying jobs to follow our passion. Not only we did that around the same time, but also we left it for health, wellness, and fitness. We had talked about possibilities of working together as I build my network for corporate wellness solutions. We also talked about the hardship and stressors of being entrepreneurs and trying to make it.

Horstmann-grass-volleyball2. We both play volleyball…He is an indoor guy and I am a double’s outdoor girl. In Oct 2013, I had the honor to be his first female partner in doubles reverse co-ed grass tourney. I got the man outside 🙂 We had a blast!

3. We were both not born in the US. He is Jamaican and I am Brazilian. The latin blood peeps.

Hiking-health4. Appreciation for nature. Sep 2015, Richard joined one of hikes I organized. He loved it. He felt the connection with nature and never looked back. He went hiking many times going forward.

5. Libras always have a spot in my heart. Libras are good peeps 🙂

just-do-it

What was immediate take away?

Richard’s death reminded that’s always about now, in the moment. We must express our feelings and thoughts now, not later. JUST DO IT! Any time in the future might be too late. It is not about fear. It is about being more present and intentional daily.

We get to have a WIN daily. Make a daily effort to add value to at least one person—that’s what brings the best out of us, that’s what makes us humans. Sustaining a healthy lifestyle allows us to express our love, emotions and doing what’s most important to us.

Lastly, I thought it’d share one my fav songs ever. I listen to it almost daily. You might find it inspiring as well. It’s by Katie Perry and it is very inspiring to me.

Rest in peace, Richard! I will miss you.

Update: Click here to see photos of the event our gym, Crossfit Atlanta, did on April 1st to celebrate Richard’s life.

Small Things Bring Peace Too – Manage Stress

“The smallest act of kindness is worth more than grandest intention.” –Oscar Wilde

So true. This quote reminds me of scuba diving. I have been intrigued by sharks the moment i came close to one diving for the first time 15 years ago. In 2013, I was inches away from great whites, a dream on mine i wanted to accomplish by the age of 40. So thrilled and thankful I did it.

Cool and so what? what does that have to do with smallest act of kindness? Under water, although seeing the big animals is awesome, the most precious moments and experiences come from taking the time to appreciate the small creatures. watch carefully how they breath and move. It’s precious. It makes me smile. Brings me peace. This appreciation started during a 5-day liveaboard scuba trip in Australia almost 15 years ago. One I hope to never be wiped out of my mind.

What does that have to do with health and wellness? a lot, actually! Stress is a silent killer. Practicing deep breathing, shut your eyes, and transporting yourself to a place and/or moment that brings you peace, makes you smile and relax is one of several FREE and easy ways that can help you manage stress! Remember to focus on things YOU CAN CONTROL!

What brings you peace?

Passion from the start

“You have to be burning with an idea, or a problem, or a wrong that you want to right.” If you’re not passionate enough from the start, you will never stick it out.” –Steve Jobs

The concept applies to most things in life. If you’re not passionate enough about your health and wellness, you will stall, start and never finish, and continue the yo-yo diet, denial, and fall back to your old habits. The emotional rollercoaster this process is taxing to the body and mind.

Minimize or avoid emotional rollercoaster rides by aligning your heart with your head!

  1. Set goals
  2. Make a plan
  3. Know of your strengths and weaknesses
  4. Hire a coach as needed
  5. Believe in yourself
  6. Know your support system
  7. Stay consistent – day in and out. Cheating will rarely help. It will prolong your journey. In some cases, you might never get to your destination.
  8. Surround yourself of like minded people
  9. Learn from mistakes
  10. Celebrate your successes

EXPRESS YOUR PASSION FOR LIFE. BE PASSIONATE. BE YOURSELF. BE FAB!

Courage – Live our dream

“The great courageous act that we must all do, is to have the courage to step out of our history and past so that we can live our dreams.”

–Oprah Winfrey

This is so true and does not only apply to living our dreams, but also to excelling on whatever we are pursuing!

Strength from will

“Strength does not come from physical capacity. It comes from an indomitable will.” –Mahatma Gandhi

We are in charge of our thoughts and decisions. We are in charge of every next step we take. Worrying about ‘stuff’ we CANNOT control is a waste of positive energy. Focus on what YOU CAN control…before you know it, life will be easier. Once one transitions mindset, he/she will be the only one to blame–that can be hard to deal with. Wonder is that’s one of the main reason many people just blame others?!?!  I say stop the vicious cycle of blaming anyone and everything for whatever is not going well. Instead, DO something, TAKE a step that will improve the situation and not add degrees of difficult for yourself or anyone else around you. Let’s be strong, be movers and shakers, be awesome, be role models!

Leaders in Business and Leaders in Health

“As we look ahead into the next century, leader will be those who empower others.” — Bill Gates

During my corporate career, I was lucky to have worked for a few people who let me grow and shine. They provided just enough guidance that allow me to grow, experiment, and take responsibility for next steps. They gave  me the opportunity to take bigger steps–in the end, it was up to me. I knew they were there to support me when needed.

They inspired me to be better and they served as role model. All i wanted was to inspire my own staff and colleagues the same way certain individuals inspired me. I failed many times as a leader and I also learned something from it every time. The fact is, failure is part of growth. Learning from them, letting them go, and applying this new knowledge are key steps. Being open minded isn’t always easy and accepting to this idea isn’t easy. Living in denial is self destruction and it is contrary to self improvement and wellness

Health wellness coaches provide knowledge, accountability, and support  that will empower you can take steps toward achieving your health goals. Similar jobs and outcomes: health = wealth. Get the help you need to succeed.  No wealth without health! We fail, we learn, we let it go the negativity, we embrace positivism, we growth — a repetitive healthy cycle I like to remind myself. Become leader in health. Become A Wellness Warrior!

Head and Heart: The Art Of Balance

“To handle yourself, use your head; to handle others, use your heart.” –Eleanor Roosevelt

Most of my career prior to becoming a health wellness and fitness coach was focused my using my head. I used my head to reverse my own health issues and prevent illnesses decades ahead weren’t short and easy steps. The body is fascinating and quite responsive.

My journey transformed my life. It turned into a 180 degree change after a few years into it. I become really passionate and committed to learning and living a healthy lifestyle. In 2014, I’ve decided to follow this passion and started Be Fab – Be You LLC with a mission to empower others to take journeys similar to mine.

As a health wellness and fitness coach, knowledge, accountability, support and helping people reconnect with what’s most important to them is key. What does all this have to do with the quote above?  I still find myself using my head to handle others. It’s a work in progress and although it is exactly the perspective some people need to hear, it’s not the best for many others!

Cheers to personal growth, self-improvement, continuous learning, continuous application of knowledge!
